The younger years of Princess Juliana

Princess Juliana was born on April 30th 1909 at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague. News of her birth was received with great joy throughout the kingdom.

Queen Wilhelmina had suffered several miscarriages, so the birth of the heir to the throne was more than welcome.

The little princess spent her first years at  three palaces; Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn, Noordeinde Palace, and Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague.

Queen Wilhelmina had received a very protective and quite confined upbringing, something she did not want for her daughter.

From an early age, the little princess accompanied her parents on various visits throughout the country; for instance, the royal family visited the zoo Artis in the capital in 1912, and in 1913 she attended the independence celebrations in The Hague.

It soon became apparent that the princess had a mind of her own and could sometimes be quite rebellious.

When the princess was 6 years old, a school group was formed at Huis ten Bosch Palace, where she received classical education together with a few selected children. Her mother provided religious education.

From 1919, Juliana received private tutoring. The curriculum was specially designed for her role as the future head of state. In addition to the standard subjects, she took lessons in singing and violin, painting, and ethnology.

In 1921, the princess joined the drama club she had founded herself.

Besides original plays, they also performed well-known works performing these for family and acquaintances.

The princess had a close bond with her father and grandmother Queen Emma. Emma adored her only grandchild.

After her secondary school years, the princess went to study in Leiden.

Juliana remained the only child of Wilhelmina and Hendrik, and various souvenirs of her appeared during her youth.
