The paper shop of Vlieger has been a household name in Amsterdam since 1869.
Jan Vlieger, born in 1844, is 11 years old when he comes to live in Amsterdam. He soon starts working for Herman Koster, who has a bookshop. When he is 25 years old, he takes over Koster’s bookshop and starts selling school bags, pens, drawing folders, etc. He also starts a publishing house. He successfully sells picture books of fairy tales, Sinterklaas and folk tales.
Board games are also published, such as the game of the goose, the Harlekijn game and the tram game. Also, 2 games are published with a Royal theme, namely the Panopticon game from 1882 and the Princess Wilhelmina game from 1886. The Panopticon was a wax museum in Amsterdam and the game depicts Prince Alexander, Queen Sophie and in the middle the royal family as they were on display in the museum.
The Princess Wilhelmina game focuses on her birth and first years of life and we were recently able to add this original game from 1886 to our collection. In 1980, this game was reissued by Atlas van stolk celebrating the 100th birthday of Princess Wilhelmina.
Things are going well for Jan Vieger and he opens several branches in the city. In 1904, his 3 sons join the company and continue the business after the death of their father. During the crisis years, things are not going so well and in 1950 there is a restart when his grandson takes over. The branches are no longer there and the focus is now on office supplies and artist supplies. In the years that follow, new owners follow and the Vlieger paper shop still exists with a shop on the Amstel.
