1927, Princess Juliana turns 18

On April 30, 1927, Princess Juliana turned 18.

A significant milestone, as she was now constitutionally old enough to succeed her mother as head of state should that situation arise.

She was also permitted to take a seat on the Council of State.

From that moment on, the princess also received her own court, financed from her annual allowance of 200,000 guilders.

This birthday was therefore celebrated in grand style. After lunch, there was a carriage ride through the decorated streets of The Hague, ending at the Binnenhof, where the party enjoyed singing, dancing, and music.

In the evening, there was a dinner at Noordeinde Palace, followed by a fireworks display over the Malieveld and a boat spectacle, watched by the royal family from an illuminated boat on the Hague Hofvijver.

In short, a fantastic day. Naturally, the necessary commemorative souvenirs were also created, including by renowned designer Chris van der Hoef. (See the article about Chris van der Hoef elsewhere on the History page.)

Adulthood also called for a new look, and against her mother’s wishes, Juliana cut off her long hair and adopted a fashionable short hairstyle.

A portrait was taken especially for this special occasion by photographer Stokhuyzen in the studio at Het Loo Palace. The photo, titled “The Spring Princess,” showed Juliana surrounded by flowers. This photo was also published as a postcard.

In September of that year, the princess began studying in Leiden and moved with several friends into a specially rented villa in Katwijk.

She completed her studies in 1930 with an honorary doctorate in philosophy and literature.
